City officials and community members gathered for the cutting of the ribbon for Santa Clarita’s new San Francisquito Creek Trail undercrossing on Sept. 28.
The undercrossing is on the west side of the Newhall Ranch Road Bridge and is sixteen feet wide.
Santa Clarita currently has over 80 miles of trails and 20 miles of paseos for local bikers and walkers to use. The city is “the best in the state for off-street trails,” Mayor Laurene Weste said during her speech prior to cutting the ribbon.
The San Francisquito Creek Trail is considered to be one of the most popular trails Santa Clarita has to offer and is used by students and workers, according to the city website.
Before this undercrossing was finalized, many cyclists were reported to have numerous “close encounters” with neighboring vehicles on the roads, according to city officials.
However, with the construction of the new undercrossing, cyclists now have a safer alternative to use to cross Newhall Ranch Road.
The upcoming official Santa Clarita Marathon will include the newly introduced San Francisquito Creek Trail undercrossing. Interested runners can register for the marathon online at http://scmarathon.org/ .
