Following the election of Donald Trump and Republican control of both chambers of Congress, many people knew that the gains made during the Obama Administration with respects to health care would soon be at risk. Despite the fact that the GOP-led Congress fortunately failed to fully repeal and replace Obamacare as they had promised and campaigned on for years, they were able to repeal the individual mandate portion of the law. When the Republicans cravenly attached the repeal of the individual mandate to the unrelated GOP tax bill, it became clear that the partisan obsession with erasing President Obama’s legacy takes priority over the lives and needs of everyday Americans.

Our own member of Congress, Representative Steve Knight (R-Palmdale), voted in favor of stripping Obamacare of a key provision that previously ensured its fiscal health. With that vote, Knight placed the entire system of insurance exchanges at risk of a spiral in which fewer Americans enter the exchanges while costs skyrocket. This vote would strip disadvantaged Americans of affordable health care in pursuit of extreme ideological goals.

If Steve Knight is willing to slash something as vital as our health insurance, what’s next on his chopping block?
